Baseball earns doubleheader split with Rams, now 11-14

O’Leary, Orgovan turn in incredible pitching performances; Mauzy’s two-RBI single breaks leads Dolphins to opening game victory

(Farmingdale, NY) – Pitchers Jon O'Leary (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot HS) and Joe Orgovan (Norwalk, CT/Rockland CC) turned in unbelievable performances with O'Leary picking up a complete game shutout as the Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team split a Sunday twin-bill with Farmingdale State. The Dolphins won the opener, 4-0 behind O'Leary's fine work on the mound before dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker during the night-cap, spoiling a near-equally impressive outing by Orgovan. With the split, the Mount is now 11-14 overall and 3-7 in Skyline Conference play.

The Mount needed very little offense during the first game thanks to the efforts of O'Leary, who scattered eight hits over nine innings while striking out a batter and walking only three. The sophomore did not allow an extra base hit, and kept the Rams on their heels throughout the game. O'Leary's performance was important because Mount Saint Vincent combined for only three hits, and scored all four of their runs during a second inning rally which featured only a single base hit. Two walks and a poorly played fielder's choice loaded the bases, and sophomore Logan Mauzy (Homer, NY/Homer Central HS) singled home two to put the Mount on the scoreboard. A wild pitch plated the third Mount Saint Vincent run, and the lead was extended to 4-0 thanks to two consecutive ground outs that allowed Mauzy to score. The rest of the day was O'Leary's as the lead and shutout were never truly threatened.

The night-cap featured an old fashioned pitcher's duel as Orgovan suffered the loss despite allowing only two earned runs and three hits. Farmingdale took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, but Mount Saint Vincent rallied to tie the score during their final at-bat thanks to a two-out RBI double by Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS) that allowed Brendan Russo (Westbury, NY/Clarke HS) to score. However, during the home half of the seventh inning, Farmingdale scored on a walk-off double to claim the win. The Mount managed only four hits during the second game, and no Dolphin registered more than one hit during the twin-bill.

With their performances, O'Leary and Orgovan remained two of the best starting pitchers in the Skyline Conference as they duo has a 7-4 combined record with O'Leary leading the Mount with a 1.80 ERA, while Orgovan is currently sporting a 2.84 ERA.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday with a home game against Baruch at 3:30 p.m.
