Baseball drops fifth straight game, 14-10 to Gothic Knights

Dolphins commit five errors and allow seven unearned runs; Munroe, Utschig both go 3 for 6

(Jersey City, New Jersey) – Sophomore Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS) and junior Joe Utschig (Pleasantville, NY/Westlake HS) each went 3 for 6, and Nick Canzano (Farmington, NY/Victor Central HS) went 2 for 5 with three runs scored, but the Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team lost its fifth straight game, 14-10 to NJCU during a game played at NJCU. With the loss the Dolphins fall to 8-10 for the 2006 season.

The game was simply wild from the start as neither team played good defense. Of the 24 runs scored, only 14 were earned as a total of nine errors were made between the two teams. NJCU (12-9) jumped out to leads of 9-2 in the fifth inning, and 14-5 in the sixth inning before the Dolphins made a remarkable comeback to make it a game. Mount Saint Vincent scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning as Utschig hit an RBI single, Munroe doubled Utschig home, and Zach Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS), Kirk Brancato (Howell, NJ/Howell HS), and Mark Russell (Carmel, NY/Carmel HS) each picked up RBI's as well. However, the comeback fell short as the Mount put two runners on base in the top of the ninth inning, but were unable to score.

The Mount was ultimately done in by their defense as they allowed seven unearned runs. Freshman pitcher Corey Kirsh (Westbury, NY/Clarke HS) allowed six runs over four innings, but only one of the runs was earned. Kirsh also struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday, March 30 when they travel to Mercy College at 3:15 p.m.
