game weekend New England road swing on Sunday with a convincing 17-3 win at Daniel Webster. The Dolphins touted another balanced scoring attack with eight different players scoring a goal, including freshman Cavan Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) who scored five times.
The two teams traded man-up goals in the early part of the first quarter on Sunday, before the Mount scored five straight goals to close the first and open the second quarter. Brian Zambri (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals over that stretch, including the man advantage goal to open the scoring in the contest.
The Dolphins open an 8-2 lead at the halftime intermission with a three goal second quarter. Valance netted his second of the game in the second stanza, while sophomore Mike Shea (Congers, N.Y.) found the back of the cage twice in the period.
Mount Saint Vincent tightened up its defense and only allowed a single Daniel Webster tally after halftime to secure the win. The Dolphins broke the game open in the third frame when they scored seven times. Ryan O'Dougherty (Middletown, N.J.) and Valance each tallied twice over the course of the quarter. Valance added his fifth goal in the fourth period, as the Mount tallied the only two markers in the final stanza.
Valance finished the game with five goals and a pair of assists. Over the two games this weekend he posted a total of 10 goals and 12 points. Shea finished the afternoon with three goals and three assists for the Dolphins and O'Dougherty also notched a hat trick with three tallies. Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished the afternoon with three points on a goal and a pair of helpers.
Frederick and Cody Green (Waldwick, N.J.) led the way for the Dolphins with four groundballs each and Chris Guastamacchia (Goshen, N.Y.) won 15 face-offs for the Mount.
Junior goalkeeper Mike Nuzzi (Westbury, N.Y.) posted 14 saves in the game for the Dolphins, including six stops in the opening quarter. Tom Driscoll of Daniel Webster made 21 saves for the Eagles and stopped eight shots in the second quarter.
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent outshot the Eagles 46-19 and also held a 24-16 edge in groundballs. The Dolphins won 15 of the 23 face-offs in the tilt and went 1-2 on extra-man opportunities.
The win improves Mount Saint Vincent's overall record to 5-3 on the season. The Dolphins will open Skyline Conference play on Wednesday when they host Maritime. Opening face-off with the Privateers is set for 8:00 p.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park.
