Chittenango, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Lacrosse team snapped a three game losing streak on Saturday afternoon with an 11-9 win at non-conference foe Cazenovia. Four Dolphins
recorded at least two points in the contest with sophomore
Dan Cohen (Ardsley, N.Y.) leading the offensive attack with five.
Mount Saint Vincent played a strong defensive game in the first half, allowing just two goals to the Wildcats. Junior Cavan Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) tallied a pair of goals before halftime as the Dolphins carried a 5-2 lead into the intermission.
Cazenovia came out and sliced its deficit to one after three quarters by outscoring the Dolphins 4-2 in the period. The Wildcats scored the first two markers of the period in the opening five-plus minutes and then knotted the score at 6-6 with back-to-back tallies 22 seconds apart. Valance gave the Mount the lead back with 1:13 to play in the frame with his third goal of the game.
In a back-and-forth fourth quarter the Dolphins opened a three goal lead after consecutive goals from Russ Holland (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.).Cazenovia responded and again sliced the lead to one when it tallied two goals less then a minute apart. Cohen scored the Mount's last two goals, including one with 1:23 remaining in regulation to give the Dolphins the final two goal advantage.
Cohen and Valance each finished with three goals on the afternoon with Cohen adding two assists for five points. Ajao added four points with a pair of goals and two assists and Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted a goal and helped on another. Ken Valentine (Centereach, N.Y.) scooped 10 groundballs for the Dolphins and Chris Guastamacchia (Goshen, N.Y.) won 14 face-offs.
Senior goalie Mike Nuzzi (Westbury, N.Y.) picked up the win in the cage after making 14 saves. He also picked up a groundball for the Mount in the winning effort. His counter part from Cazenovia, Alex Ianicello, made 23 stops.
Cazenovia was paced on the day by Cory Tilton who totaled six points with a pair of markers and four assists. Brent Brearley chipped in with three goals for the Wildcats.
Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent outshot Cazenovia 41-36 and picked up 43 groundballs to 30 for the Wildcats. Mount Saint Vincent was successful on 23 of its 26 clearing attempts and went 2-for-10 in extra man opportunities.
The win evens Mount Saint Vincent's record at 3-3 overall. The Dolphins will take to the field again on Sunday afternoon when they take on Wells. Opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
