In a tightly contested first half Alvernia scored two of the three goals to carry a 2-1 lead into halftime. Junior Chris Beermann (Floral Park, N.Y.) tallied his first goal of the season at the 9:59 mark of the first quarter, before Alvernia's Jon Lozoskie knotted the score at 1-1 with under a half minute left in the period. Robert Finnegan scored the only goal of the second quarter to give the Crusaders the slimmest of leads at the intermission.
The Dolphins responded with two goals in the third period when Derek Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and Cohen scored three minutes apart to tie the score at 3-3. In the fourth quarter the two teams exploded for four goals apiece with Cavan Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) tying the score at 7-7 with 34 seconds left in regulation time.
Mount Saint Vincent opened the period with two straight goals to take a 5-3 lead after Cohen and Mike Visintin (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored over the first six minutes of the frame. After Chris Baker and Cohen traded goals to make it 6-4 in favor of the Dolphins, Finnegan ran off three straight goals to push the home standing Crusaders in front 7-6 with just over four minutes left in regulation.
After Valance scored to tie the score and send Mount Saint Vincent to its second overtime game of the season, the two squads played a scoreless first overtime period. After playing nearly a full second overtime frame, Finnegan scored his fifth of the game and seventh of the season with 49 ticks left in the period to send Alvernia past the Dolphins.
Finnegan finished the day with his five points and also picked up a groundball. The Crusaders assisted on seven of their eight goals with seven different players picking up a helper. Dan Hoffstetter led the way for Alvernia with 11 groundballs and seven face-off wins.
Cohen finished the afternoon with four points as he added an assist to his three goal effort. Senior defender Ken Valentine (Centereach, N.Y.) picked up a team-high nine groundballs, while Chris Guastamacchia (Goshen, N.Y.) won eight draws.
Nuzzi continued his strong senior campaign with 13 saves on the afternoon and also scooped five groundballs in the contest. His counterpart Kevin Shupp made 14 stops for Alvernia and finished with three groundballs.
The overall team statistics in the contest were as close as the final score would reflect. Alvernia held the edge in shots 40-39, while the Dolphins picked up 43 groundballs to 41 for the Crusaders. Alvernia also won 11 of the 20 face-offs in the game.
The loss evens up Mount Saint Vincent's overall record at 2-2. The Dolphins will look to get back into the win column on Wednesday afternoon as Misericordia. Face-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
