Dan Cohen (Ardsley, N.Y.) paced the Dolphins with three goals and a helped in the tilt.
Cobleskill held the lead at the half and following the third quarter until a late Mount Saint Vincent rally tied the score and sent the game into extra time. Trailing 8-7 at the 7:02 mark of the fourth quarter Cohen knotted the score at 8-8 with his third marker of the afternoon. The Dolphins outscored the Tigers 4-2 in the fourth quarter and overtime to pick up the win.
Valance picked up the game winner 52 seconds into the extra session off a feed from Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.). He took the pass on the right wing and beat Cobleskill keeper Jake Lazore to the upper corner to send the Mount to the win.
Saturday's game was the first time in program history that the Dolphins have won a season opener and it also marks the first time in the program's history they has picked up a win in overtime.
Cohen led the Dolphins with four points on the day on the strength of his three goals and an assist. Frederick also posted four points with a goal and three helpers, while Derek Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) added a goal and a pair of assists. Cohen also led the Dolphins with nine groundballs and rookie Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scooped seven for the Mount.
The Tigers were led by Pete Gonzalez who finished with three goals and an assist and also led all players with 12 groundballs. Steve Hughes added a pair of tallies for the visitors.
Mike Nuzzi (Westbury, N.Y.) picked up the win in the cage of the Dolphins making 18 saves on the day and picking up four groundballs. Two goalies combined to make 13 saves for Cobleskill with Tom Knezick making seven stops in the first half.
Overall in the game Cobleskill held the edge in shots 41-33 and in groundballs 55-50. Cobleskill won 11 of the 19 face-offs in the game. The Dolphins converted 16 clears in the contest and posted the only two man advantage goals of the afternoon.
The win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 1-0 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Sunday when they play host to Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Face-off with the Monks is slated for 5:00 p.m. at Aviator Field in Brooklyn.
