Dan Williams (Brick Township, NJ/St. Rose) all enjoyed an incredible stretch of play on Saturday as the Mount Saint Vincent competed three times during a six-hour span at the Villa Julie College Tournament and came home with a 1-2 record during matches against solid competition. With the 1-2 finish, the Mount is now 3-4 overall. Mount Saint Vincent lost the opener, 3-0 to powerhouse Mount Olive College, and then downed Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-2. Their third match was a hotly contested affair during which host Villa Julie won the match, 3-1.
The opener proved to be the toughest team the Mount would see all season to date as Mount Olive swept the match, 30-17, 30-22, 30-9 to improve to 5-1 for the season. Mount Olive's height and depth proved to be too much for the Mount as the Dolphins -.031 for the match and registered only three total blocks. Williams was Mount Saint Vincent's leader with five kills, and sophomore Chris Dotoratos (Bronx, NY/Salesian) amassed 15 assists.
The sting of a tough loss did not stick around too long as the Dolphins rebounded to play two of their finest matches of the season. During a thrilling 3-2 win over Wentworth, the Mount rolled through the first two games, 30-28 and 30-21, before Wentworth caught fire to win the next two games, 30-26 and 30-24. The back-and-forth action set up a fifth and deciding game that proved to be the most exciting game of the day as Mount Saint Vincent rallied for a 16-14 win to take the match. Pufahl and Ross were nothing short of unstoppable as both registered double-doubles. Pufahl notched 21 kills and added 19 assists, while Ross registered 20 kills and 13 assists. But the story of the match may have been Williams, who slammed home 10 kills, amassed five total blocks, and registered a career-high 32 digs during one of the finest all-around performances of his terrific career. Mount Saint Vincent hit .174 and combined for 28.5 total blocks and 115 digs as six Dolphins reached double-digit dig totals.
The momentum from a big win carried over into the third match of the day as Mount Saint Vincent did lose, 3-1, but engaged in one of their finest efforts of the season against an excellent VJC team. Mount Saint Vincent lost the opening game, 30-23 before evening the match with a 30-27 win during the second game. From there, Villa Julie won the next two games, but it wasn't easy, as the Mustangs won 30-28 and 30-25. Pufahl and Williams were on fire from the opening serve as each registered 17 kills and Williams had 15 digs, while Pufahl amassed 11. Ross also had a solid match with 13 kills, three service aces, and a team-high 20 digs, while Dotoratos had 45 assists. Mount Saint Vincent had a .110 hitting percentage, and 18 total blocks.
