Men’s Volleyball overcomes injuries, Medgar Evers, 3-1

Three Dolphins register double-doubles as Mount Saint Vincent improves to 2-2

(Riverdale, NY) – Senior Russell Butts (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach HS) had a tremendous night with season-highs in kills (14) attack percentage (.367) and blocks (8), and Arnold Ross (Wilton, ME/Mount Blue HS) and Dan Williams (Brick Township, NJ/St. Mary's) each netted double-doubles as the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team scored a 3-1 win over visiting Medgar Evers to improve to 2-2 this season. Mount Saint Vincent won the opening two games by 30-25 scores before dropping the third game, 28-30. The Mount dominated the fourth game, winning 30-21 to take the match.

The win was especially noteworthy for the Mount not only because of the three double-doubles they registered, but also the team's performance despite missing two starters due to injuries. Setter Matthew Reinhardt (Staten Island, NY/McKee-Staten Island Tech) and outside hitter T.J. Pufahl (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage HS) were forced to the sidelines with leg injuries, and as a result freshman Chris Dotoratos (Bronx, NY/Salesian) moved from libero to setter, and junior Chris Herrera (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) earned his first career start. Both performed admirably as Dotoratos registered 35 assists and five total blocks, while Herrera compiled three kills, two service aces, eight digs, and three blocks.

Ross and Williams were their usual terrific selves as Ross compiled 13 kills, three service aces, and a career-high 24 digs, while Williams was responsible for 10 kills, four service aces, and a career-high 25 digs.

Overall, Medgar Evers had a better hitting night with a .274 attack percentage compared to Mount Saint Vincent's .149, but the Dolphin defense won the match. The Mount had 85 digs compared to Medgar Evers's 46, and held a 15.5 - 15 blocking edge as well.

Medgar Evers (1-2) was led by junior Keegan Garcia (Trinidad & Tobago/Akian Senior HS), who had a monster night with 20 kills against only three errors, 11 digs, and five total blocks, while junior Rawle Grogan (Brooklyn, NY/Prospect Heights HS) posted a triple-double with 10 kills, 36 aces, and 13 digs.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 1 when they travel to Yeshiva for a NECVA Metro Conference match at 7:30 p.m.
