Mount Saint Vincent defeated Polytechnic 3-1 to advance to the final match where they were defeated 3-0 by the host Bard Raptors. Scores of the semifinal against Polytechnic were 27-30, 30-26, 30-20, and 30-25 in favor of the Mount, while the final went 26-30, 24-30, and 28-30 against the Dolphins. Freshman
David Guerrero (East Meadow, NY) finished the two matches with 48 kills, including 31 winners in the semifinal.
Guerrero hit .364 in the contest and was one of two players to record double figure kills against the Fighting Blue Jays. Classmate John Furka (Massapequa, NY) recorded 19 winners for the Mount and hit .395. Fitzroy Lawson (Kingston, Jamaica) finished the match with seven kills for the Dolphins, with Chris Dotoratos (Bronx, NY) contributing three in the winning effort.
Freshman Mike Quinn (Wantagh, NY) recorded a career-high in assists in the semifinal, posting 54 helpers. Phil Anselmo (Bronx, NY) contributed six helpers in the contest to go along with a pair of service aces and a team-high 18 digs. Quinn also recorded two aces and finished up with eight defensive digs.
As a team in the semifinal, the Dolphins hit .296 and recorded 61 kills. Mount Saint Vincent also finished with four service aces, 73 digs and 15 total team blocks, including eight total blocks from Furka. The win marked the third time this season the Dolphins have downed Polytechnic.
In the final, Bard bested the Mount for the fourth time this season. Ryan Vogel (Holbrook, NY) led the offensive attack with 18 kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Guerrero had another strong match, finishing with 17 kills and a team-high 11 digs.
Quinn was again the team leader in assists with 25 and also added a pair of kills and five defensive digs. Dotoratos recorded 16 helpers in the contest and posted a double-double with 10 digs.
Vogel led the Mount with three service aces and also chipped in nine digs and a total block. Furka and Lawson recorded the other blocks in the contest for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins entered the tournament after a 6-2 mark in the Skyline play with both losses coming to Bard. The split on Sunday brings the Mount's season to a close with a 13-15 overall record.
