inaugural Skyline Championship in 2008 at Bard on Sunday afternoon with a thrilling 3-1 triumph over the Raptors on Sunday to capture the league crown in 2009. The Dolphins took the back-and-forth affair by scores of 31-29, 26-30, 30-26 and 34-32. Senior
T.J. Pufahl (Bethpage, N.Y) was named the Championship MVP after collecting 27 kills in the Mount's two matches.
The Dolphins advanced to the Championship match for the second straight season after sweeping Yeshiva in the first semifinal of the day. The Dolphins posted 51 kills to the Maccabees 15 in the contest, winning the tilt 30-16, 30-16 and 30-19. Pufahl led the Mount with 11 kills to go along with six service aces and three digs. Rookie Justin Amaral (Warwick, R.I.) posted 10 winners in the match, while also posting six digs and a match-high seven aces. Chris Dotoratos (Bronx, N.Y.) handed out 45 assists for the Dolphins.
Bard forced a title contest rematch by downing Purchase 3-1 in the second semifinal on Sunday. Nick Chan led three Raptors in double-figures in kills with 20 winners and also totaled five blocks and seven digs. Elijah Strauss posted 14 kills for Bard and Maxwell Howard finished with 10.
In the match that would decide the 2009 league championship, Mount Saint Vincent had five players record at least 10 kills. Amaral finished with a career-high 20 kills and also collected a pair of service aces and 10 defensive digs. Pufahl finished with 16 winners, with the last brining the Dolphins even at 32-32 in the deciding game. Pufahl also finished with four digs, three total blocks and a service ace in the win.
Matt Krauszer (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) also finished with 16 kills to go along with 12 digs and four assists. John Furka (Massapequa, N.Y.) finished off 14 winners and Rob Hockenjos (West Hempstead, N.Y.) posted 10 for the Mount. Amaral, Furka, Krauser and Chris Dotoratos (Bronx, N.Y.) posted double-doubles for the Mount with the last three all lifting 12 digs. Dotoratos recorded the double-double by finishing with a match-high 70 assists.
Hockenjos nearly missed a triple-double in the championship tilt after recording six digs and six service aces in addition to his kills total.
Overall in the match, the Mount posted 80 kills to 48 for Bard and recorded six more aces (10-4). The Mount did commit 20 service errors in the match to just four for the Raptors. Bard doubled by the Dolphins in total team blocking on Sunday, finishing with 15.0 to just 7.5 for the Dolphins.
Chan finished off another solid effort against the Dolphins with 18 kills, nine digs and six total blocks. Strauss finished with 13 kills and five total blocks. Setter Brice Ormesher also had a strong outing with nine digs, five blocks and 40 assists.
The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 15-13 overall on the season.
