YONKERS, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball squad split a Skyline Conference twinbill with Russell Sage on Tuesday evening. The Dolphins dropped game one 5-4, before rebounding for a 12-1 win in the second game.
Jillian Troncoso (West Haverstraw, NY) drove in six runs on the day, including four in the game two win.
Mount Saint Vincent fell behind early in game one, as Russell Sage's Maria Pasquarelli drove a home run out to deep left field to put the Gators out in front by a score of 3-0 before the Dolphins could have an at-bat. Sage jumped out to a five run advantage in the top of the third when they scored two more runs.
The Dolphins got on the board in the bottom of the third when Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, NY) scored from second on a sacrifice bunt. That would be all for the Dolphins until the bottom of the seventh when they pushed across three runs. Troncoso helped in the rally with a pinch hit two-run single through the right side. The Dolphins would come up just short however, as Russell Sage starter Melissa McConville got a fly out to end the threat.
Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY) picked up two hits in the game, while O'Shea crossed home with two of Mount Saint Vincent's four runs in the contest.
In game two, the Mount Saint Vincent bats came to life as they pushed across 12 runs on nine hits. Troncoso put the Mount in front for good with a first inning three-run home run to left center. O'Shea added a grand slam in the third and the first five Dolphins to hit in the fifth scored to secure the win.
Dana McGuire (Setauket, NY) went 3-3 with three runs scored in the game, while Koerner added two more hits, an RBI and a run scored in the victory. O'Shea scored two more runs to go along with her four RBI for the Mount.
Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN) got the decision in both games on Tuesday as her record moves to 12-9 on the season. In game one she allowed just three earned runs and struck out 10. In the game two win she worked 5.0 innings and allowed just the one earned run. She did not walk a batter and she fanned four Gators.
The split moves Mount Saint Vincent to 14-12 overall on the season and to 3-7 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Friday when they host Sarah Lawrence. First pitch at Fay Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
