Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN/Hamilton South Eastern HS) was outstanding once again on the mound as the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team spilt a doubleheader with SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday, dropping the opener 12-9, but rallying to win the night-cap, 5-4 during games played at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. With the split, Mount Saint Vincent is now 12-10 overall and 4-10 in Skyline Conference play.
The opener saw Old Westbury jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but an RBI single by O'Shea and a two-RBI single by sophomore Jillian Troncoso (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland HS) tied the score, and a thriller ensued. O'Shea hit a two-in the bottom of the third inning to give the Dolphins a 5-3 lead but Old Westbury scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and two more in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8-5 lead. The lead was 9-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore Dana McGuire (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville HS) doubled in a run to make it 9-8, and two batters later, McGuire stole home as part of a double-steal to tie the score. However, Old Westbury battled back for three runs during the top of the seventh inning to clinch the win.
McGuire went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while O'Shea was 3 for 4 with three RBI's and three runs scored.
The nightcap was every bit as entertaining as its predecessor as the two teams went toe-to-toe during the first six innings, and sixth inning RBI singles by Mary Kate Walker (Warwick, NY/Burke) and Gina Angolillo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison HS) put Mount Saint Vincent ahead 4-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning, and a win appeared imminent. However, Old Westbury rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning after a two-run home run, and the teams entered the bottom of the seventh tied at four. That's when lightning struck for the Dolphins as Koerner led off the stanza with a double, and was quickly sacrificed to third base. With two outs, Old Westbury walked the bases loaded, and McGuire was promptly hit by a pitch, driving home the winning run as the Mount scored their biggest win of the season.
Six different Dolphins registered hits, and McGuire drove in three runs, including the game-winner. Gonzalez pitched a complete game, allowing only four earned runs, and she struck out five.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Sunday, April 22 when they travel to Farmingdale State for a 12:00 p.m. Skyline Conference doubleheader.
