Softball Opens Skyline Schedule With Split Against Old Westbury

season on Saturday as it split a doubleheader with Old Westbury. The Dolphins came from behind to earn a 4-3 victory in game one, with the Panthers responding with an 11-2 win in game two. Sophomore Marni O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 in the second game for the Mount.

 

Old Westbury opened game one with two runs in the first inning and then one more in the third on a Jessica Spero home run to left center field. The Dolphins would respond with single runs in their final four at-bats to pick up the win.

 

Victoria Baldini (Yonkers, N.Y.) drove in the Mount's second run in game one when she drove her first career home run over the right center field wall in the fourth inning. After the Dolphins pulled off a double steal in the fifth to tie the game, Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y.) found her way out of a run down between third and home to slide home with the game winning run.

 

Kelly Donlon (Carmel, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 in the opener for Mont Saint Vincent as five players combined for six hits. Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, Ind.) picked up the win in the circle after working the complete game. She allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five.

 

In game two Old Westbury would jump on top 6-0 after their first at-bat, pushing across all the run support starter Deborah Ciccarelli would need. The Panthers finished the inning with six runs on five hits and one Mount Saint Vincent error. Sherrida Maxwell, Nicole Mannino and Spero each drove in a run in the inning.

 

The Dolphins would get on the board in the home half of the first and would cut the Old Westbury lead to 6-2 after Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) drilled a home run out to left center field. She drove in Katie Shea (Flushing, N.Y.) who led off the inning with a bunt single.

 

The Dolphins would not be able to get anything else going in the contest and the Panthers would go on to plate five more runs to secure the nine run victory. Three Old Westbury players finished with two hits, with Maxwell and Alyssa Clancy each scoring three runs.

 

Lisa and Marni O'Shea combined for five of the Dolphins eight hits in the second game. Marni O'Shea collected three singles, while Lisa O'Shea finished 2-for-3 scored a run.

 

Gonzalez was saddled with the loss in game two after allowing six earned runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Ciccarelli earned the win for Old Westbury after working 5.0 innings. She fanned four and allowed six hits.

 

The split on Saturday moves Mount Saint Vincent to 1-7 overall on the season and to 1-1 against Skyline rivals. The Dolphins will play another league twinbill on Sunday when they travel to Farmingdale St. The set with the Rams is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
