league foe Mount Saint Mary on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins were shutout by a score of 3-0 in the opener but rallied for a 5-4 win in eight innings in game two.
Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y.) slid home safely on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning in game two to give the Dolphins the win.
In game one Mount Saint Vincent outhit the Blue Knights 8-6, but could not connect on the key hit in the game with runners in scoring position. The Mount put two on with no one out in the first and had runners on second and third with one out in the fourth but could not push a run across on Mount Saint Mary starter Erin Lappe.
Mount Saint Mary scored all three of its runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Danielle Orender and a two-run double by Christine DelPiano. The cushion would be all Lappe would need as she fired the complete game, striking out seven and walking just one.
Dana McGuire (Setauket, N.Y.) went 2-4 in the contest and Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) and Koerner each ripped triples for the Dolphins. Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, Ind.) took the loss after working 7.0 innings and allowing the three runs on six hits. She fanned six in the game and did not walk a batter.
In game two the Dolphins struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Katie Shea (Flushing, N.Y.) doubled and was driven home on a Jillian Troncoso (West Haverstraw, N.Y.) single through the middle.
The Mount held the lead until the Blue Knight scored three in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The advantage would hold up until the Dolphins tied the score in the sixth inning when Koerner and Troncoso picked up RBI singles to knot the score at 3-3.
From there the game went back and forth over the final two innings. Mount Saint Mary pulled ahead 4-3 when it collected three hits, including a double from Oernder and a run scoring single from DelPiano in the seventh. The Dolphins tied the score in dramatic fashion when Lisa O'Shea ripped a two out double off the left field wall to send the game into extra innings.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect Mount Saint Mary was unable to score in the eighth inning. In the home half of the frame Koerner was advanced to third on a sacrifice and later dove home safely on a wild pitch to give the Mount the split.
Lisa O'Shea and Marni O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) each went 2-4 with a run scored, while Koerner went 1-4 with a run and an RBI. The Dolphins pounded out 10 hits in the game and eight of the nine players in the lineup had at least one base hit.
Gonzalez earned the game two victory, working her 10th complete game and moving to 6-4 on the season. She allowed the four runs on 11 hits. She struck out six more batters and allowed just one walk.
The split moves Mount Saint Vincent to 9-9 overall on the season and to 4-8 in the Skyline Conference. Next up for the Dolphins is a non-conference doubleheader at Sarah Lawrence on Monday afternoon. The set in Bronxville is set for 4:00 p.m.
