Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN/Hamilton South Eastern HS) held a Manhattanville College team, who scored a combined 21 earned runs against the Mount a year ago, to 10 earned runs over two games, but the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to the powerhouse Valiants, 10-0 and 8-0 on Wednesday during games played at Manhattanville College. With the losses, Mount Saint Vincent is now 5-8 overall and 3-6 in Skyline Conference play.
The opener was a far closer game than the score indicated as Manhattanville capitalized on an uncharacteristic eight Mount Saint Vincent errors to score eight unearned runs. Two Dolphins errors in the bottom of the first inning led to three Valiant runs, and three of Manhatatnville's six runs in the bottom of the third inning were scored after two more Dolphin errors. Mount Saint Vincent also had only one base-runner during the game, thanks to a first inning single by Piccoli. Gonzalez was excellent, as she allowed 11 hits and two earned runs, while walking only one Valiant batter.
The nightcap saw the Mount clean things up defensively as the Dolphins committed only one error, but Manhattanville's bats exploded for 12 hits and Manhattanville scored eight runs during the first three innings to put the game away. Piccoli went 2 for 2, and freshman Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood HS) went 1 for 2, but the Mount was unable to score for the second straight game.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Friday, April 13 when they host Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference foe Marymount College for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader.
