(White Plains, NY/Our Lady of Victory) exploded for an incredible eight hits, nine runs, and nine RBI's and freshman pitcher
Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN/Hamilton South Eastern) allowed a combined six earned runs over two games as the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team stunned 2005 and 2006 Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Finalist Saint Elizabeth, 13-2 and 16-4 on Monday during a doubleheader played at Saint Elizabeth. With their first-ever wins over CSE, Mount Saint Vincent is now 5-4 overall, 2-0 in HVWAC play and very much in the hunt for their first HVWAC Regular Season Championship in six seasons.
The opening game featured an array of Saint Elizabeth miscues that led to an incredible eight unearned runs for the Mount as CSE committed an uncharacteristic eight errors. After Gina Angolillo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison HS) and Jessica Piccoli (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) scored runs in the top of the first inning, CSE tied things in the bottom of the frame, but that was as close as the game would be. The Mount rallied for six runs in the top of the third inning, three more during the top of the fourth inning, and scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule and score their second HVWAC win of the season. After a tough first inning, Gonzalez was brilliant the rest of the way, allowing only four hits, while striking out five and walking only one. Koerner and Piccoli each went 2 for 4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while O'Shea went 1 for 3 with two runs scored.
The nightcap saw the Saint Elizabeth defense settle in and play a much smoother game, but it also saw the Mount Saint Vincent bats at their best. The Dolphins scored 16 runs with 17 hits as the top-five batters in the Dolphin line-up went a combined 11 for 23 (.478). The Mount's offensive explosion took a while as the Dolphins enjoyed a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Eagles tied things in the fourth, and it appeared as if a battle was under way. However, Mount Saint Vincent exploded for 11 runs over the final two innings to invoke the mercy rule once again and come home with their biggest wins of the season. O'Shea went 3 for 4 with three RBI's and three runs scored, including her third home run of the 2007 season in the top of the second inning. Koerner went 2 for 5 with four RBI's and two runs scored, while Gonzalez was outstanding once again. The rookie hurler allowed four runs on four hits during the bottom of the fourth inning, but otherwise did not allow a run, while striking out five and walking only two.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 when they travel to Mount Saint Mary for a 3:30 p.m. Skyline Conference doubleheader.
