outstanding performances on the mound, and the Dolphin defense committed only one error during two games, but the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team was swept in a Skyline Conference doubleheader by Centenary College, 7-2 and 1-0 during games played at Centenary on Sunday. With the losses, the Mount is now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Skyline Conference play.

The opening game saw the Dolphins go toe-to-toe with their powerhouse foes, but ultimately the Mount left nine runners on base as the Dolphins struggled against a strong Cyclone pitching staff. The Mount combined for 10 hits, but only scored twice as freshman Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood HS) had three hits and an RBI, and Gonzalez and senior Jessica Piccoli (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) had two hits apiece. Centenary opened a 4-0 lead after three innings, but the Mount offered a rally of sorts in the fourth inning when freshman Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, NY/Our Lady of Victory) reached on a fielder's choice, stole two bases, and then scored on an error to make it 4-1. An inning later with the score 6-1, Koerner drove home freshman Erin Santerre (Tupper Lake, NY/Tupper Lake HS) to make it 6-2, but the Mount failed to score again.

Gonzalez pitched the complete game and struck out six during seven innings of work.

The nightcap proved to be a pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for 11 hits and both enjoyed several scoring opportunities, with neither breaking a shutout until the bottom of the eighth inning when Centenary's Lauren Cassoff hit a leadoff walk-off home run to send the Mount home without a win. Gonzalez was stellar on the mound, allowing the lone run on seven hits while she struck out four and walked only three. Five different Dolphins registered hits during the second game.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 when they host USMMA-Kings Point for a Skyline Conference doubleheader at 4:00 p.m.
