MORRISTOWN, NJ – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team's bid to repeat as the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Champion fell short on Saturday, as the Dolphins were defeated 2-1 by Saint Elizabeth in the Championship Game. The Dolphins reached the final with an 8-0 win over Sarah Lawrence earlier in the day.
In the semifinal, the Dolphins used five runs in the first inning and single runs in the second, third and fourth to earn the win. Five Mount Saint Vincent players recorded two hits in the game, as the Mount pounded out 12 hits in the win.
Dana McGuire (Setauket, NY) recorded two hits in the win to go along with a run scored and an RBI. Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN) and Jillian Troncoso (West Haverstraw, NY) each finished the game 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Nina Pagani (Yonkers, NY) and Mary Kate Walker (Warwick, NY) each finished the win with a pair of hits and a run scored. Walker added an RBI in the winning effort.
Gonzalez picked up the win on a one hit shutout. She worked 5.0 innings allowing just two base runners and struck out eight.
In the final, Mount Saint Vincent would out hit Saint Elizabeth but committed three errors, leading to an unearned run. Walker led the Mount with two of the three hits in the game, including a double. Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY) also ripped a double and picked up the lone RBI. McGuire scored Mount Saint Vincent's run in the contest.
Gonzalez again fired a complete game one hitter in taking the loss. She worked 8.0 innings and allowed just the one hit. She walked two and struck out five in the loss. The loss drops her record to 17-14 on the season.
The split on Saturday moves Mount Saint Vincent's overall record to 19-18. The Dolphins will learn on Monday if they receive a bid to play in the ECAC Division III Regional Tournament.
