Dolphins and Gators Split Skyline Conference Doubleheader

Sage on Sunday afternoon. The Mount won the opener 6-1 before falling in an 8-7 heartbreaker in game two.  Karssia Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y.) picked up seven hits over the course of the two games and senior Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, Ind.) fired a three hitter in the game one win.

 

Gonzalez allowed just three singles in the game one win. She did not walk a batter and struck out three for the Dolphins. Gonzalez also went 1-for-3 at the plate in game one with an RBI.

 

The Dolphins opened the game up with five runs over their first two at bats. The Mount took advantage of four Sage errors in the first two innings to build the big lead. Koerner homered in the second inning to push the Mount out in front 5-0.

 

Mount Saint Vincent outhit Sage in game one 13-3 with Koerner and Katie Shea (Flushing, N.Y.) each going 3-for-4. Each player also drove in three runs for the Dolphins with Koerner crossing with a pair of runs. Lisa and Marni O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) each collected two hits for the Dolphins.

 

Game two turned into a slugfest as Sage connected on five home runs in the Gators' 8-7 win. Jennifer Ahearn slugged a pair of round trippers for Sage, including a two out, two-run shot in the seventh inning to send Sage to its fourth win in five games.

 

After falling behind in game two 4-1, the Dolphins plated six runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-6 lead. Gonzalez drove in a pair of runs in a four run fifth with a single.

 

Koerner continued to swing a hot bat in game two by going 4-for-5 with a double. She also scored three runs. Marni O'Shea also finished a strong day with a 3-for-4 effort with two runs and an RBI in game two. Gonzalez went 2-for-3 in the game two loss with a run scored and three RBI.

 

Gonzalez took the loss in game two for the Mount after allowing eight runs on 10 hits. She struck out three more Gators and walked one.

 

The split moves Mount Saint Vincent to 8-18 overall on the season and to 3-7 against Skyline Conference opponents. The Dolphins will step out of league play on Monday when they travel to the College of New Rochelle for a pair of games. First pitch on Monday with the Blue Angels is set for 4:00 p.m.
