Softball sweeps Sarah Lawrence on Senior Day, now 2-2 in HVWAC

Roberts pitches 10 strikeout gem in opener; Dolphins’ bats explode in night-cap

(Riverdale, NY) – The final home game of the 2006 season proved to be memorable for the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team not only because it was the final home game for two Dolphin seniors, but because two nearly flawless games proved how far the Mount has come during the 2006 season. During a doubleheader sweep of Sarah Lawrence College, the Dolphins did just about everything right as they were victorious, 5-0 and 11-2 to improve to 10-21 overall, and 2-2 in HVWAC play.

The opener featured one of the finest efforts during the outstanding career of senior pitcher Krista Roberts (Wilmington, MA). After pitching out of a bases loaded, no out jam during the top of the second inning, Roberts settled down and allowed only two baserunners the rest of the way. The southpaw struck out a career high 10 batters and allowed a total of three hits and only three walks. Mount Saint Vincent broke the game open in the third inning when they scored three runs, and then scored two more times in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 5-0 final. Sophomore Mary Kate Walker (Goshen, NY/Burke HS) and junior Jackie Rizzotto (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) each had stellar days at the plate as Walker went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Rizzotto went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

A tight opening game paved the way for an even tighter start to the night-cap as the teams battled during the opening innings and the Dolphins led 1-0 after two frames. However, Mount Saint Vincent erupted for nine runs in the third inning after sending 13 batters to the plate, nine of which walked during the inning. Jessica Piccoli (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS), Katie Cusmiani (Belle Harbor, NY/Molloy), and Gina Angolillo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison HS) each drove in runs with base hits during the third inning for the Mount, and senior Jacqui Dauphinais (S. Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional HS) scored twice and drove in a run during her Senior Day. On the mound, freshman Jillian Troncoso (W. Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland HS) pitched a complete game and allowed only two earned runs on two hits and walked only four.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Sunday, April 23 when they host Mount Saint Mary at noon. The games will be played at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY.
