(Brooklyn, NY) – Freshman
Jessica Riddle (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) allowed only a single earned run over seven innings, and fellow freshman
Jillian Trocoso (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland HS) drove in two runs, but the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team ended the 2006 season with a 7-3 loss to the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Semifinals played at St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Mount ends the 2006 season with a 15-24 overall record, a fantastic finish considering that the Dolphins began the season 2-18.
Errors were the name of the game for Mount Saint Vincent as three costly miscues led to six Saint Elizabeth runs. The Dolphins opened the scoring in the first inning when a Jessica Piccoli (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) sacrifice fly scored Dana McGuire (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville HS) for a 1-0 lead. A second inning Mount Saint Vincent error allowed two Golden Eagle runs to score, but the Dolphins bounced back to score twice after a Troncoso double in the top of the third inning and take a 3-2 lead. The bottom of the third inning would prove to be a disaster for the Mount as two consecutive errors led to four unearned runs for Saint Elizabeth, and a 6-3 Golden Eagle lead that would prove to be insurmountable.
Riddle went the distance, allowing only one earned run while striking out four and walking only two. Piccoli finished the game 2 for 2 with an RBI and run scored, while McGuire scored twice.
The loss marks the second consecutive season that Mount Saint Vincent lost to Saint Elizabeth in the HVWAC semifinals, but with more than 20 members of the team expected to return for the 2007 season and a fine recruiting class on its way, Mount Saint Vincent should be back in the thick of things next year.
