Softball swept by Eagles during HVWAC opening day doubleheader

Dolphins score two combined runs during twinbill; Riddle pitches nightcap gem

(Riverdale, NY) – Pitchers Krista Roberts (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) and Jessica Riddle (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) enjoyed stellar performances on the mound, but the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team fell to 2-14 overall after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the College of Saint Elizabeth on Friday at Mount Saint Vincent. The Mount dropped the opener 7-1 before they were outlasted 2-1 during the nightcap. The Dolphins are now 0-2 in Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) play.

St. Elizabeth wasted little time getting things started during the opener as they scored two unearned runs during the first inning and led 2-0. Mount Saint Vincent cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning when freshman Dana McGuire (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville HS) singled home Amanda Prendergast (Fair Lawn, NJ/Paramus Catholic). However, St. Elizabeth broke the game open with a run in the top of the fourth inning and four runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Mount Saint Vincent managed only three hits during the opener and struck out a combined 14 times. Roberts was fantastic on the mound, allowing five earned runs while striking out four during a complete game.

The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel as Riddle continued her outstanding recent play, limiting the Eagles to only four hits and one earned run during a complete game, but the Mount combined for only five hits during a 2-1 loss. Riddle, last weeks HVWAC Player of the Week, struck out two and walked only one hitter during her HVWAC debut. The game was limited to five innings due to darkness. Junior Jessica Piccoli (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) and freshman Jillian Troncoso (W. Haverstraw, NY/W. Haverstraw HS) each knocked out two hits with Troncoso's RBI double during the second inning accounting for the Mount's only run. Mount Saint Vincent made a run to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when Troncoso singled, stole second and third base, but was caught trying to steal home to tie the game.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Sunday, April 2 when they travel to face defending Skyline Conference Champion Manhattanville at noon.
