(Purchase, NY) – Sophomore goalie
William Raftery (Bronx, NY/Salesian) made eight saves during his first start of 2006, and the Dolphin defense held a potent Manhattanville attack scoreless for much of the first half, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team suffered its third straight loss to start 2006, a 5-0 setback to Manhattanville College during a game played at Manhattanville. The loss drops the Mount to 0-2 in Skyline Conference play as well.
The beginning was an even affair with both teams having chances, but neither was able to score for more than 20 minutes of the first half. However, Manhattanville struck twice in a very short span, scoring at the 23:37 and 27:43 mark to jump ahead, and took a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Valiants (3-0-1, 1-0 Skyline Conference) scored almost immediately after halftime ended, and then added two more goals at 81:49 and 85:09 to secure the win.
The story of the game for Mount Saint Vincent was Raftery, who made four saves during each half, several of which were off of shots from point-blank range. The sophomore was outstanding for the second straight game, keeping things close despite the fact that the Mount was out-shot 19-2.
Raftery and the Dolphins return to action on Sunday, Sept. 17 when they face Yeshiva at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at Randall's Island in New York City.
