Mount Saint Vincent Downs Lehman, Runs Winning Streak To Five

Mongelli fires six shutout innings in win

New York, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team scored 11 runs over the first five innings and held on for an 11-6 non-conference win over Lehman on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman

Joe Blackford drove in four runs in the Mount's win over Lehman.
right-hander Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) worked 6.0 shutout innings in the win and James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored four runs.

The Dolphins scored nine of their 11 tallies in the first three frames, scoring once in the first, five times in the second and three more times in the third. Labartino scored in each of the first three frames and drove in a run on a bunt base hit with the bases loaded in the second.

After Labartino walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) singled him to third. Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) then recorded his first of three RBI on a groundout to put the Mount on the board in the bottom of the first.

In the second inning the Dolphins posted four base hits to score five times to break the game open until the later innings. The first five Mount Saint Vincent batters in the inning reached safely and the first out was a sacrifice fly to center from Pope. The big hit in the inning was a two run single through the middle from Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, N.J.).

The Dolphins would plate three more runs that proved to be important in the third inning with two more hits. Blackford again had the big hit for the Mount with a two run triple to right center. Labartino also drove in a run with an infield single in the frame to move the Dolphins in front 9-0 after three.

The Mount took a commanding 11-0 lead in the fifth inning with two more runs on a second RBI groundout from Pope and a run scoring single from Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, N.Y.)

The 11 run cushion appeared to be more than enough until the Lightning plated six runs in its final at-bat. After being held to just two hits over the first eight innings, the Lightning finished with four safeties in the ninth, including a solo home run from Amado Guzman and a bases loaded double from Alberto Alicia.

Mongelli held Lehman down over 6.0 strong innings to move to 2-2 on the season. He allowed just one hit and walked just three. He struck out 11 Lightning hitters, including a string of four straight from the second through the third.

Blackford finished 2-3 with four RBI on the day, with Labartino going 2-2 with his four runs and a pair driven in. Cuozzo, T.J. Laible (Rockaway, N.Y.) and Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.) all recorded two hits in the win.

The win moves the Mount to 9-7 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to extend their winning streak on Wednesday when they take on Yeshiva in a midweek league set. First pitch at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, N.Y. is slated for noon.
