Canzano collects three hits in game two

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team dropped a doubleheader at New Jersey City University on Monday afternoon by scores of 3-2 and 13-6. Anthony Palandro (Westbury, NY)

pitched five strong innings in the opener and Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, NY) went 2-3, while Nick Canzano (Farmington, NY) went 3-4 with a run and an RBI in the second game of the set.

The Dolphins picked up a run in the top of the first in game one on the strength of a hit and one Gothic Knight error. Senior Eddie Park (East Meadow, NY) shot a single to center field and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt. After advancing to third on a groundout, Park crossed on a wild pitch for the early one run advantage.

New Jersey City would knot the score at 1-1 in the home half of the third inning. Andrew Decibus led of the inning with a single and went on to swipe second and third. Decibus was pushed across with the tying run on a Tom Burke sacrifice fly.

The Mount would answer right back with a run in the top of the fourth to retake a one run advantage. Al Schor (Norwalk, CT) walked and was pushed home following singles from Couzzo and Logan Mauzy (Homer, NY).

Mount Saint Vincent would hold the lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Gothic Knights tied the score at 2-2. The run was unearned as Burke scored on a failed pickoff attempt with two outs in the inning.

The Gothic Knights would move on to take their first lead of the day in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off single from Jose Fulgencio. Following a lead-off double from Mark Hoyer and a sacrifice bunt from Decibus, Fulgencio shot a single to the right side for the win.

Palandro started a worked 5.0 innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run. He walked four and struck out three in the contest. Jon O'Leary (Bohemia, NY) took the loss in relief, going 1.1 innings and allowing a pair of runs. Westley Lopez picked up the win, throwing a complete game and allowing just one earned run on seven hits.

Cuozzo collected two of the Dolphins' seven hits in the contest, with Mauzy picking up the only RBI for the Mount.

New Jersey City would cruise to the doubleheader sweep in game two, toppling the Mount 13-6. The Gothic Knights posted six runs in the bottom of the first off of starter Mike Trainor (Patterson, NY). The Gothic Knights added a run in the second and then hung multiple runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Mount Saint Vincent did not score a run until the fifth inning, as they scored single runs in the fifth and sixth, before plating four tallies in the top of the seventh.

Canzano collected a double in his three hit game, while Michael Pope (Massapequa, NY) went 1-3 with a pair of RBI for the Mount. Schor continued his strong hitting by going 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Trainor took the loss for the Dolphins, allowing seven runs, four earned, on five hits in just 1.2 innings of work. Scott Taylor (Jersey City, NJ) pitched 3.0 innings in relief and surrendered two runs, neither earned, on three hits. Taylor fanned three in his outing.

The doubleheader loss drops the Mount to 4-6 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to action on Thursday, March 27 at Western Connecticut. First-pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
