first contest, while
Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, N.Y.) drove in two of the Mount's three runs in the back end of the doubleheader.
Game one of the day featured just nine total base hits, with the Panthers collecting six and the Dolphins three. The lone run of the game came in the second inning when Old Westbury manufactured what would be the game winning run. Emmanuel Mateo led off the frame with a walk and went on to steal both second and third. He was pushed across when Ryan Blanco rapped into a double play.
Robert Whitenack picked up the win in the opener on Saturday, spinning 9.0 innings and allowing just the three Mount Saint Vincent hits. The only extra base hit he allowed in the outing was a double from Nick Triolo (Homer, N.Y.). He struck out 11 Dolphins and walked just two. Kirsh also went 9.0 strong innings, allowing the one run on six hits. He did walk six while fanning four.
In game two, Old Westbury jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Panthers sandwiched single runs in the first and third innings around a three run frame in the second. The Panthers plated the three runs after recording four hits and a run scoring walk.
The Dolphins would get back into the game with a pair of runs in the sixth on a two run safety from Cuozzo. After Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Joe Blackford (Stewartville, N.J.) walked and John McManus (Bayside, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, Cuozzo shot a two-run single up the middle to cut the Mount deficit to 5-2.
The Dolphins would inch to within two runs in their final at-bat after a RBI single from Blackford and would bring the tying to the plate but could not find the equalizer.
Six different players record hits in the contest for the Mount with Cuozzo and Blackford picking up the only RBI. Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work.
The sweep drops Mount Saint Vincent to 4-7 overall on the season and to 0-2 in the Skyline Conference. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Polytechnic. First pitch for the league doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
