Four Run Ninth Inning Sparks Mount Saint Vincent’s Win Over Lehman

Pope, McManus collect three hits apiece

BRONX, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team won its sixth straight game on Tuesday with an 8-5 come from behind win at Lehman. A pair of freshman led the way for Mount Saint Vincent, as

Michael Pope (Massapequa, NY) and John McManus (Bayside, NY) each collected three hits.

Trailing 5-4 in the top of the ninth inning, Mount Saint Vincent pushed across four runs on four hits to secure the win. Vito Cataldo (Wantagh, NY) got the rally started with a lead-off walk in the frame. He moved to third on a Vinny Todino (Eastchester, NY) bunt base hit and then later scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Todino would be pushed across on a squeeze play that not only scored the run, but resulted in a base hit for Zach Munroe (Milford, CT). Pope and Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT) would each drive in runs with doubles in the frame.

After Lehman plated a run in its first at-bat the Dolphins answered with a pair in the second to pull in front. McManus drove in both runs with a two out, two-run single to center field. Lehman would answer in the bottom half of the inning with two more runs to pull back in front 3-2.

The Dolphins would sandwich single runs in the fourth and sixth inning around a pair from Lehman in the home half of the fifth set up the game winning rally in the ninth.

Todino was one of four players in the game to finish with at least two hits, as he went 2-5 with a run scored. Zach Munroe continued to swing a hot bat for the Mount, as he went 2-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Pope finished the contest 3-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, while McManus had a 3-4 day with three runs driven in.

Anthony Palandro (Westbury, NY) got the start on the mound for the Dolphins and worked the first four innings. He allowed three earned runs on five hits in the outing. He walked just one batter and struck out six. Jon O'Leary (Bohemia, NY) picked up the win in relief and moved to 1-2 on the season. He worked the final five innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out seven Lightning batters and walked just one.

The win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 12-11 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon for a Skyline Conference doubleheader with Polytechnic. First pitch for the twinbill is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Westchester Community College.
