Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent battled back late Wednesday evening to earn a 1-1 draw against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Marillac Field. The hard fought contest was a defensive battle until goals from each side were scored in the second half.Â
The Dolphins controlled much of the opening half, generating eight shots and five corner kicks while keeping the Mariners without a shot until the 37th minute. UMSV continued to pressure after halftime, but Merchant Marine broke through in the 64th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Mount Saint Vincent continued to make their way down the field and finally found the equalizer with just 3:20 remaining. Michelle Zuniga finished off the scoring chance in the 87th minute, with Cameron Cruz, who had a tremendous game for the Dolphins, providing the assist. Zuniga led the Dolphins with six shots, including four on goal, while Cruz added a shot on target and an assist. Kiana Navarette and Nadine Padilla each registered a shot on goal, while Brittany Boyle added three shots.
Kerrigyn Lynam initially scored what was to be a game breaking goal late in the second, but the effort was waved off by a USMMA yellow card.Â
Kaitlyn Grady made three saves in goal for the Dolphins, who finished with a 17-5 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. UMSV moved to 1-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Skyline Conference play.
