Poughkeepsie, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent was back in action on Wednesday, this time up in Poughkeepsie to challenge Vassar College. Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Dolphins couldn't hold off a mid-game surge from Vassar, falling 8-4.
The loss put the Dolphins at 6-13 overall.
UMSV struck first in the opening inning, as Jayson Nigro worked his way on base and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Devin Lane to take a 1-0 lead. The Dolphins added to its advantage in the third inning when Logan Garcia singled and eventually scored on an RBI base hit from Stephen Marinez.
The Dolphins would later capitalize on a Vassar error to extend the lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
Vassar responded in the bottom half of the third and took control in the fourth, stringing together timely hits and capitalizing on defensive miscues to push across five runs and take a two run lead, and would later add three more runs to make it an 8-3 ball game.
UMSV showed life again in the eighth inning, as Evan Dutzer came around to score on an RBI groundout by Joe Reid, but the late push was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Offensively, the Dolphins totaled 10 hits on the day, led by Garcia, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Marinez also had a strong performance, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while swiping two bases. Nigro reached base twice, going 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, while Dutzer added a hit, a walk, and a run scored.
On the mound, Joseph Santos started and allowed just two hits and no earned runs over three innings, striking out three. Stephen Neglia provided a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Non-conference action rolls on for the Dolphins, this time in the form of a showdown with Western Connecticut State University on Friday.
