Union, NJ - The University of Mount Saint Vincent dropped both games of a doubleheader against William Paterson, as early offensive surges by the Pioneers proved too much to overcome for the Dolphins. The result of the two game series put the Dolphins at 8-17 this season.
William Paterson exploded for seven runs in the opening inning of game one and added another in the second to take an early 8-0 lead. The Dolphins showed fight in the third inning, putting together a four-run rally highlighted by an RBI triple from Carmen Henderson and run-producing at-bats from Samantha Aviles, Keira Stroud, and Kaitlyn Trigos. The Pioneers, however, responded immediately with a seven-run third inning of their own, capitalizing on errors and timely hitting to pull away and secure the win.
Game two was a more competitive contest in the early frames. UMSV answered an early deficit with a three-run second inning, as Henderson, Zoe Fields, and Paige Staley each drove in runs during the rally to give the Dolphins a 3-1 lead. William Paterson one once again quick to respond, tying the game in the second before regaining control in the third. UMSV added a run in the fourth, but the Pioneers pulled away late with a big fifth inning to complete the sweep.
Aviles impressed offensively with a three hit game one and four hits on the day, while Henderson reached base three times in five at-bats.
The Dolphins will look to bounce back this weekend, starting with a Skyline double header against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on Saturday.
