Dolphins Earn Opening Weekend Sweep Over Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent made a statement in their opening weekend series, sweeping Brooklyn College on the road in their first two games of the season. The first contest was a 4-1 victory, with game two finishing with a score of 5-4.

Senior Savannah Autobee earned the start in the opening contest and rewarded head coach Kevin Carbon with the decision. The Pueblo, Colorado native went the distance and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four in seven innings.

Sophomore Gracie Laukkanen followed suit with a strong performance of her own. The second year hurler wowed with eight strikeouts in seven innings, plating just four runs along the way.

The Dolphins struck first in the third inning of game one when Paige Staley delivered an RBI groundout that plated Kendra Rodriguez, and added to their lead in the fifth when Staley's two-run double drove home Zoe Fields and Riley Van Pelt. The scoring was capped in the sixth when Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice and Emma Capozucca and Carmen Henderson crossed the plate, giving UMSV a comfortable advantage.

In game two, UMSV again took control early, scoring twice in the first inning. Chloe Hart's fly ball brought home Samantha Aviles, and Capozucca's RBI single put the Dolphins ahead 2-0. Brooklyn battled back to tie the game in the first, but UMSV reclaimed the lead in the third inning when Paige Goerman's double set up an unearned run on a Capozucca ground ball, with Simone Caruso following with an RBI single to extend the margin. A fifth-inning RBI groundout by Capozucca pushed the lead to 5-2. Goerman was a catalyst at the plate with a multi-hit day, scoring twice and recording a double, while Hart contributed with a double and added a run. Capozucca finished with three RBI, and Caruso added one of her own.

The Dolphins next challenge Lehman College in a Friday afternoon tilt as they look to keep their winning ways in tact.
