Purchase, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent earned a dominant 17-2 victory over Purchase College, controlling the game from start to finish on the road on Tuesday evening.
The win is the first of the season for the Dolphins, and the first win of
Alicia Rodriguez's head coaching career. UMSV is now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Dolphins set the tone early, jumping out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter before breaking the game open with six goals in the second to take a commanding halftime advantage. The Dolphins continued to pour it on in the second half, adding five goals in the third and three more in the fourth to secure the convincing win.
As impressive as the offense was, so, too, was the defense. The unit posted a second half shutout, insuring the lopsided win.
Offensively, UMSV was led by a balanced attack, with multiple players contributing to the team's 17 goals. Ella Meberg paced the Dolphins with a strong scoring performance, adding seven more goals to her senior stat line. Isabelle Gurley also contributed on the attack, helping maintain consistent pressure throughout the contest with four goals of her own, while Brittany Boyle and AB Burnett scored twice apiece.
Boyle also impressed at the other end of the field. The junior led the way with four caused turnovers while also adding five ground balls. Gurley had eight ground balls and seven draw controls of her own, both pacing the Dolphins. Burnett and Sofia Marcos each contributed two caused turnovers as well.
Makenna Reekie dominated in net, as the reigning First Team All Skyline selection made five saves across seven shots on goal.
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent controlled possession and dictated the pace of play across all four quarters, using a well-rounded offensive effort and steady defensive play to earn the conference victory. They'll look to keep this play up heading into the weekend when they challenge Mount Saint Mary College at home.
