Davenport, FL - The University of Mount Saint Vincent completed their spring break trip in Florida on Thursday, competing against UMass Boston with the hopes of capturing their second win of the season. The Dolphins ended up falling to UMass Boston, 11–7, despite battling back with a late offensive push after an early deficit.
The end result wasn't what the Dolphins wanted, but history was made. Senior
Will Granata continued to put the finishing touches on his UMSV career; after recording his 100th career hit earlier this season, his eighth inning home run gave him 19 for his career, the most in program history.
Mount Saint Vincent got on the board in the second inning when Granata scored on a
Tyler Margolis sacrifice fly. UMass Boston, however, would responded with a big third inning, scoring five runs to take control and build a 6–1 lead. The Dolphins continued to chip away and delivered their strongest stretch in the middle innings. In the fifth,
Stephen Marinez and
Michael Vascellaro drove in runs with RBI singles, while
Zach Turko aadded another RBI to cut into the deficit.
Granata's three run bomb made it 11-7, but it came too little, too late.
Granata had a strong day at the plate, going three-for-five with a walk in addition to his three run home run. Marinez and
John Anthony Spanoudakis recorded two hits apiece.
The Dolphins will put Florida in the rearview mirror and set their sights on the Skyline. They'll open conference play in Throggs Neck on Saturday in a matchup against Maritime.
