Dolphins Impress With Four Set Win Over CCNY

Riverdale, NY - The first Sharp Center win for the Dolphins is in the books.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent showed out in front of their home fans and evened their record in an impressive defeat over the City College of New York. The Dolphins had a well rounded effort from every player who touched the floor, and it reflected with a victory in four sets (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22).

The Dolphins are now an even .500 in the early goings of the season with a 2-2 record.

Raeden Nieves starred for UMSV offensively. He led the charge with 12 kills, a team-best, while also adding six digs and two service aces. Matthew Barrancos paced the Dolphins with 19 assists while chipping in seven kills, five digs, three service aces and a pair of assisted blocks. Freshman Jose Dominguez and sophomore Tyler Hanna recorded eight kills apiece while libero Roel Lucero led the way with eight digs.

The Dolphins were specifically impressive at the front of the net. Hanna and junior Yestro Luciano Jr. had two blocks each, with Nieves, Dominguez and Terrence Short adding one apiece to the stat line. UMSV totaled seven solo blocks and eight assisted blocks in the win.

UMSV showed their grit against the Beavers early, a sign of things to come. Despite trailing by as many as six points in the opening set, the Dolphins chipped away and eventually tied things at 21 with a Short block. Barrancos and Short would combine for kills to put the team in a position to earn the first set win, and did just that when Luciano Jr. secured an ace.

The Dolphins turn their attention to Saturday when they host a tri-match against John Jay College and Elmira College.
