Granata Shines On Mound In Season Opener

Troy, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent kicked off their 2026 campaign on Saturday, challenging Russell Sage College on the road. It was a pitcher's duel throughout, but timely, situational hitting from the Gators was enough to give them the edge, resulting in a 2-0 loss for the Dolphins.

Despite the end result, senior Will Granata was the star of the show. The southpaw received the opening day nod from head coach Matt Rienzi and rewarded him with the decision. Granata tied his career high with 11 strikeouts and punched out at least one batter in each inning he pitched, including striking out the side in both the second and third innings.

The rest of the Dolphins staffed impressed as well. Senior Jake Bland was first to come out of the bullpen and allowed just one run on three hits with four strikeouts, with classmate Michael Iocco finishing the final inning out with a ground out against the only batter he faced.

The revamped UMSV offense had their chances, with runners reaching base six different times. Senior Tyler Margolis reached base twice (one hit, one walk) while Pablo Austin, Stephen Marinez and Zach Turko each registered hits as well. Granata also walked once in his three at-bats.

The Dolphins are next scheduled to take on New Jersey City University this coming Wednesday.
