Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent was completely in sync on Sunday afternoon, and that was reflected in the final score. It was the Dolphins who emerged victorious in a rare, late weekend showdown against Purchase College, with the final score registering at 50-47. For UMSV, it's their fourth win this season, including their second in conference play.
Grace Kennedy and
Ashley Marrocco once again led head coach
Maria Di Domenico's offense. The duo both finished in double figures, with Kennedy securing 15 points to go with 10 rebounds and two steals while Marrocco had 10.
Julia Angeles led all players with four steals while adding nine points and five boards while
Michaela Ligon added eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
The first half was a tight affair, but largely went in the favor of the Panthers. Despite battling, it was Purchase who stayed on top for the majority of the 20 minutes, including taking a 25-19 lead into the break.
Marrocco was on fire coming out of halftime. The Staten Island native went on a personal 7-0 run to kick off the third, including knocking down to three point attempts, which brought the score to 30-27. After a pair of Angeles free throws made it a one point game, Kennedy gave the Dolphins their first lead since the first quarter when she found her way into the paint for a layup. Angeles,
Angelina Escobinas and
Grace Giacinto would chip in on both ends of the floor, giving UMSV a four point lead going into the fourth.
The Dolphins defense - led by Angeles, Giacinto, Ligon and
Olivia Dutzer - earned credit in the win as well. The team forced tough shots throughout the contest and 28 Purchase turnovers, including four in the final quarter. Kennedy would get baskets when it mattered most, with the sophomore scoring seven of her points across the final 10 minutes.
The Dolphins will look to keep the momentum on their side when they host Old Westbury on Wednesday.
