Riverdale, NY - It was a valiant comeback effort from the Dolphins, but it came just a bit too late.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent challenged St. Joseph's University Brooklyn at home on Friday afternoon, as the Dolphins looked to capture their third win of the year and first in 2026. After the Bears jumped out to an early double digit lead, UMSV did their best to make it a game - unfortunately, however, the team's comeback attempt fell short, resulting in a five point home loss.
The defeat put the Dolphins at 2-10 overall this season.
Ashley Marrocco continued her terrific stretch of games into the new year. The graduate student tied for the team lead with 11 points, including a pair of timely three pointers in the fourth quarter. Freshman
Grace Giacinto returned to action for the first time in over a month and made an impact on both ends of the floor with an 11 point, five rebound, three assist and three steal performance.
Nailea Green scored eight points to go along with a team-best nine boards while contributed seven rebounds, five points, three steals and two assists of her own.
It was a struggle for the Dolphins on both ends of the floor to open the game. A full court press by the Bears resulted in a 12-0 lead to kick off the contest, putting UMSV in an early hole. Both Giacinto and Green would provide offense for the team, as the pair combined for all seven of the first quarter points. SJBK saw their lead balloon to as many as 15 points in the second quarter, but a seven point run by Giacinto and a big three pointer from
Hailey Shalor brought the deficit to just five points to finish the half.
The success at the tail end of the second carried into third. The Dolphins went a combined 17-0 over that span, with Shalor,
Michaela Ligon and
Alexa Zephirin each contributing. A Shalor three capped off the run, giving the Dolphins a 29-27 lead at the 7:09 mark, their first of the contest.
The two sides would trade leads before the Bears went up by six to start the fourth.
Another comeback attempt followed. A Marrocco three brought the score to 42-40 before Green tied things up at the charity stripe. The Dolphins and Bears continued to trade buckets, with Marrocco personally answering each time with additional threes.
The Bears, however, took advantage of turnovers to secure the win late in the fourth.
The Dolphins will look to get back on track on Tuesday in a home showdown with Mount Saint Mary.
