Dolphins Put Up Terrific Fight Against Maccabees, Lose Late

Riverdale, NY - The Dolphins returned from break and immediately entered conference play - and despite the end result, the future is looking bright for the team.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent put up a terrific performance against Yeshiva University, one of the top teams in the Skyline. Despite the end result being a 80-74 loss, the team strung together enough strong performances that they'll be feeling strong heading into additional Skyline contests.

The result put the Dolphins at 1-10 through 11 games thus far.

The Dolphins did a strong job keeping pace with a tough Maccabees squad throughout the first half. It was a one possession contest up until the 15 minute mark, with sophomore Eric Woodberry carrying the load for UMSV offensively. The Greenburgh native scored six of the team's first nine points, while also grabbing two boards. Blake Salice Mitchell flexed his muscles on the glass as well, picking up an assist and rebound as well.

Yeshiva would attempt to push their lead to double digits, but the Dolphins would continuously climb back, with Woodberry, Mitchell and Gado all chipping in offensively. An Alex Chi layup brought the score to 28-25 with just over six minutes remaining in the half, but a 15-8 run by Yeshiva closed out the half to make it a 43-33 game at the break.

The Maccabees would see their lead jump to 14 points in the early going of the second half - but to UMSV's credit, they did not back down. Salice-Mitchell was a force in the paint, knocking down six of the team's first eight points, with guard Alex Chi adding two assists on those buckets. Minutes later, fellow big Joel Gado's layup brought the deficit to eight with just 13:54 left, as the Dolphins upped their physicality on both ends of the floor.

Both sides would continue to trade baskets, giving Yeshiva a comfortable lead as the clock winded down. The Dolphins, however, would go three straight possessions with three balls from Chi, Tyler Conlee and Louis Vidal, with the final three from Vidal bringing the score to 70-63. Gado would convert another shot attempt in the paint, makng it a 70-66 game with nearly two minutes left in regulation. A Woodberry three pointer from the corner brought the score to 76-74, but the Maccabees provided too much firepower offensively, eventually leading to the win.

Woodberry led all scorers with 26 points, along with nine rebounds, two steals and an assist. Salice-Mitchell had a well-rounded stat line of 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal while Gado 12 points with nine boards as well. Vidal also finished in double figures with 11 points on five-of-eight shooting.

The Dolphins will look to keep the momentum in their favor in a weekday Skyline showdown against Mount Saint Mary.
