Riverdale, NY - The result may have not been what the Dolphins wanted, but the heart shown on the floor was noticeable throughout.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent challenged Mount Saint Mary College in a Skyline Conference tilt on Wednesday evening, with the Dolphins looking to return to the win column for the first time in the new year. Despite falling to the Knights 73-56, UMSV went toe-to-toe with one of the premiere teams in the Skyline, a possible positive trend with time still left on their schedule.
Head coach
Maria Di Domenico trotted out a new starting five, one that played with pace that matched Mount Saint Mary.
Ashley Marrocco continued her tremendous stretch of recent play, scoring a team-best 17 points.
Grace Kennedy did a little bit of everything for her team, with 16 points, seven assists and six boards, while
Michaela Ligon 11 boards and four steals of her own.
Sophia Mandalakis came off the bench and impressed with an eight point, four rebound night while
Olivia Dutzer added four rebounds and a pair of assists of her own.
After falling into an early 10-2 hole, the Dolphins answered with a seven point run to make it a one possession game early.
AB Burnett came off the bench and immediately added a scoring punch, as she converted an and-one attempt. Her effort was two Marrocco baskets, with Kennedy and Ligon picking up assists.
The Knights would see their lead balloon to double figures, but the Dolphins continued to chip away in the second quarter. Ligon knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a three point game before
Hailey Shalor found her way into the paint for a layup, bringing the score to 32-31. UMSV would head to the locker room down three.
Mount Saint Mary proved why they have a 6-2 Skyline record in the second half of play. The team scored 15 second chance points while grabbing a number of key offensive rebounds, a huge reason behind their lead once again reaching double figures, one that lasted until the final buzzer.
UMSV returns to the road on Thursday to challenge Old Westbury.
