Dolphins Come From Behind, Top Bloodhounds In Season Opener

Box Score Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent opened their 2025-26 season in a major way, with the men's soccer team playing host to John Jay College in the season opener. The Dolphins replicated their success from a season ago and took it up a level, as their high powered offense was the driving force behind a 4-3 victory over the Bloodhounds.

The win gives newly minted head coach Max Watson his first as a member of the University.

UMSV peppered the Bloodhounds keeper all evening long. The Dolphins outshot John Jay 25-8, with 14 of those attempts coming in the first period. Despite this, it was John Jay who would jump out to an early lead, scoring with just four minutes of expired time in the opening half.

To UMSV's credit, they didn't let the deficit deter them, and instead answered just two minutes later. Standout sophomore William Sornin tied things up after receiving a strong through-ball from Barry Jermaine Johnson, with the Brussels, Belgium native scoring in the opening contest in back-to-back years.

John Jay, however, would regain the edge midway through the first and would carry said lead into the break.

UMSV would quickly prove why they're ready to be a player in the Skyline Conference. Sophomores Marti Senyer and Manuel Vidal scored within five minutes of one another in the opening minutes of the second half, giving the Dolphins the lead for good. Sornin would add another point to the stat line with an assist to Vidal, while reigning conference Rookie of the Year Javier Trujillo picked up the helper to Senyer.

Sebastian Ciurlizza would convert a penalty kick attempt in the 84th minute after being fouled in the box to put the finishing touches on the victory.

Second team All-Skyline selection Samuel Reine made three saves on six shots faced, good enough to secure the victory.

The Dolphins return to Marillac on Wednesday, this time challenging Medgar Evers in a mid-week evening kickoff.
