Bronx, NY - The playoffs are around the corner - and the Dolphins are hitting their stride at the right time.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent took on Mount Saint Mary College and Purchase College this week, both of which had postseason implications. The Dolphins, who are fighting to get into the conference tournament, took one of two from the Knights before sweeping the Panthers, positioning them as the fifth seed with one series left in the regular season.
Gracie Laukkanen continued to cement herself as not only the ace of UMSV's staff, but one of the best starters in the Skyline. The first-year pitcher propelled her teams to wins in each series, first against the Knights with a seven inning performance that saw her allow one run on three hits with four strikeouts. She then shut down the Panthers on Thursday night in yet another complete game, this time with eight strikeouts. Her 2.23 season ERA ranks second in the conference, with her 68 strikeouts good for sixth.
Aaliyah Dejesus once again starred with seven hits in 12 at-bats while
Samantha Aviles was equally impressive over that same span with seven hits as well. Miralba Sandez,
Chloe Hart,
Paige Goerman,
Sabrina Colon,
Sierra Romero and
Liana Vivanz had two or more hits in each of the four games as well.
The Dolphins combined to score 27 runs over this four game stretch, as their bats equaled the pitching, resulting in the team's success.
UMSV is set to challenge Old Westbury on Long Island on Sunday, with both teams battling it out for a spot in the postseason.
