King's Point, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent was looking to bounce back after a tough two games against Purchase on Friday, but they will have to wait another day to climb back into the win column. The Dolphins traveled to King's Point on Sunday, challenging the United States Merchant Marine Academy in their latest Skyline Conference double header. The Mariners got the best of UMSV, winning a tight game one by the score of 6-4 before completing the sweep with a 16-2 victory.
The Dolphins continued to impress early, jumping out to a three run lead before USMMA could cross the plate.
Conor Martin furthered his standout season for the Dolphins with an RBI double to right field in the second inning.
Jason Albert and
JT Jimenez would each drive in runs in the third on a sacrifice fly and a single, respectively.
The Mariners would take the lead in the bottom half of the fourth with four runs, but UMSV would answer right back. This time it would be graduate student
Joey DiNorcia who got the job done by taking advantage of an error by the USMMA defense. The home team, however, would respond once more, taking the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth for the victory.
Alex Alvarez got the call on the mound for the Dolphins and struck out six batters across 5.1 innings. Graduate student
Justin Dutzer impressed when he got out of a one out, bases loaded jam to give his team a chance to come back in the top of the seventh.
Jimenez and
Dom Porto each had two hits, with both also reaching base by walks.
USMMA scored 16 unanswered runs across the first five innings of action while the Dolphins only registered four total hits. Sophomore
Zach Turko was responsible for two of them.
The Dolphins are set to challenge John Jay in a single game this coming Wednesday.
