Farmingdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team was looking to get back in the win column on Sunday as they took on Skyline powerhouse Farmingdale State College for a conference doubleheader. The Dolphins unfortunately fell to the Rams in both games by the scores of 3-0 and 10-3.
Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Farmingdale hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run. The Rams brought in two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and the Dolphins could not find a response. Despite the loss, senior
Alex Alvarez impressed in game one as the right-handed pitcher allowed just three runs and struck out eight batters. UMSV struggled offensively, recording just two hits, which came from senior
Jason Albert and sophomore
Zach Turko.
The Dolphins picked up the pace in game two, recording six hits and even seeing a lead in the fourth inning. Junior
Joshua McCormick got things started with a double to right center and would later score off a double from Albert. A sacrifice fly from junior
Pablo Austin would then send Albert home and give UMSV a 2-1 lead.
The Rams quickly reclaimed their lead, but the Dolphins continued to fight back. In the top of the eighth, Turko singled up the middle and would go on to score off a hit from junior
John Anthony Spanoudakis. Unfortunately, the Rams proved to be too much for the Dolphins to overcome.
Graduate student
Joey DiNorcia and junior Will Granta both contributed a hit for the Dolphins. Junior pitcher
Tristen Leone impressed from the mound, finishing with 2 strikeouts in one inning.
The Dolphins will look to bounce back and return to their winning ways on Wednesday, April 2, in a non-conference game against Western Connecticut State. It will be an exciting matchup as UMSV faced the Wolves just a few weeks ago down in Mrytle Beach when DiNorcia secured the sweep with a two-run walk-off double.
