Myrtle Beach, SC - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team wrapped things up in Myrtle Beach with three games on Wednesday. The Dolphins went 1-2 on the day as they faced the Oswego State Lakers, the Hartwick College Hawks, and the University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls.
UMSV got on the board in the second inning as freshman
Riley Van Pelt double to left field to drive in junior
Simone Caruso. However, Oswego State responded with 6 runs to extend their lead to 8-1. The Dolphins answered back in the top of third with 4 hits, which included a single to left field from junior
Emma Capozucca that sent sophomore
Ireyshka Lebron home. UMSV executed defensively, but would ultimately fall to the Lakers 10-2.
The Dolphins recorded 9 hits across 6 innings and were led by senior
Aaliyah Dejesus who registered two. Sophomore
Mirabla Sandez impressed with a double in her one at-bat.
UMSV's next challenge of the day was against the Hawks of Hartwick College, who the Dolphins faced earlier this week in a thrilling 6-3 victory. The Hawks put up two runs in the first inning, but UMSV was able to tie things up by the bottom of the second as senior
Sabrina Colon and Dejesus both hit doubles to send in two runs.
The Dolphins then trailed behind until the fifth inning when UMSV rattled off 4 hits that helped put them ahead 6-5. Sophomore
Paige Goerman and freshman
Chloe Hart recorded the first two hits for the Dolphins. Goerman would go on to score off a single from freshman
Gracie Laukkanen, but it was a triple to left field from Dejesus that sent Hart and Laukkanen home and gave UMSV the lead. Unfortunately, the Dolphins fell short in their comeback attempt as the Hawks answered with their own three-run inning to win the game 8-7.
Dejesus and Colon led the way for UMSV with three hits each. Freshman pitcher
Elizabeth Espinosa impressed on the mound, striking out five batters.
Despite dropping the first two games, the Dolphins return to Riverdale on a high note as they defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle 11-1 in their final game in Myrtle Beach. Colon once again led the Dolphins in hits with 3. The Plainview, New York native also led with 4 RBIs. Capozucca, Dejesus, junior
Nichole Reyes, sophomore
Kayla O'Connor, and freshman
Paige Staley also chipped in, recording 2 hits each. Laukkanen received the win and finished with seven strikeouts.
Next up for the Dolphins is a doubleheader against Hunter College on Saturday, March 22, at Randall's Island.
