Bronxville, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team made the short trip to Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday evening for a Skyline Conference match against the Gryphons. The Dolphins were able to take the first set, but would ultimately lose 3-1.
UMSV came out strong in the first set, quickly building a lead with key plays from graduate student
Felix Paulino and senior
Olatomiwa Ibitayo. The Dolphins maintained their momentum, scoring off of kills and service aces, until the Gryphons tied things up at 13-13. However, UMSV responded with another surge, led by Ibitayo and freshman
Terrence Short, to remain ahead. Sarah Lawrence was able to keep things close, but the Dolphins successfully secured the set, 25-23.
The Dolphins struggled in the second as the Gryphons went on multiple runs which the Dolphins could not recover from. UMSV saw a brief lead early in the third until Sarah Lawrence would go on another run to extend their lead and win the set. The Dolphins were able to score on consecutive possessions in the fourth set, capitalizing on their opponents' errors, but the Gryphons were too much to overcome.
Graduate student
James Rose and Short registered 11 kills and 3 digs each. Sophomore
Yestro Luciano Jr. and Ibitayo also had the same stat line, both finishing with 8 kills and 3 digs. Paulino led the way with 10 digs to go along with 33 assists and 3 service aces. Senior
Carlos Martinez added 9 digs for UMSV.
The Dolphins will look to get back in the win column as they compete in a Skyline Tri-Match with Manhattanville and Yeshiva on Sunday, March 23.
