Myrtle Beach, SC - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team kicked off their 2025 season on Sunday with two games in Myrtle Beach. The Dolphins unfortunately fell to both UMass Boston and Stevenson University, but have an exciting week ahead of them.
In their first game, which saw the first pitch at 9AM, UMSV faced the undefeated Beacons of UMass Boston. The Dolphins allowed two early runs and meanwhile struggled to capitalize on their baserunners. UMSV saw their first hit of the game in the third inning as junior
Nichole Reyes singled to short. This gave the Dolphins some much-needed momentum, and they would go on to string together two more hits from seniors
Aaliyah Dejesus and
Sabrina Colon.
The Beacons scored again in the third off two hits and a five-run fourth inning would break the game open. While UMSV registered a few more hits, they were unable to drive in any runs and ultimately lost 8-0.
Dejesus led the way in hits with two. Junior pitcher
Savannah Autobee led in putouts with three, while Colon, junior
Emma Capozucca, and freshman
Chloe Hart added two. Hart also registered the first hit of her collegiate career.
Against Stevenson, the Dolphins struggled to make contact, tallying only two hits, the first being from freshman
Riley Van Pelt in the sixth inning. On the defensive side, UMSV held the Mustangs scoreless through the first three innings, but a two-run double from Stevenson in the fourth along with a three-run seventh inning made it difficult for the Dolphins to bounce back. Despite a late single in the seventh from Colon, the Dolphins were unable to rally, closing out the game scoreless.
Freshman
Kendra Rodriguez and sophomore
Mirabla Sandez both had five putouts, while Colon and freshman
Gracie Laukkanen each earned two assists. In her first appearance on the mound at the collegiate level, Laukkanen also struck out four batters.
The Dolphins will look to get their first win of the season on Monday, March 17, as they take on Martin Luther College and Oswego State.
