Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Dolphins Split in Skyline Tri-Match

Patchogue, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team headed to Long Island on Saturday morning for a tri-match at St. Joseph's University. The Dolphins used the momentum from their win on Thursday night in the first match, sweeping Old Westbury 3-0. However the Dolphins struggled against the hosting Golden Eagles and reigning Skyline Conference Champions and would fall 3-0. UMSV is now 3-7 overall, with a 2-1 conference record.

The Dolphins picked up where they left off, scoring 8 straight points and seeing an early 11-4 lead over the Panthers. UMSV would go on another run with the help of graduate student James Rose and sophomore Yestro Luciano Jr. to win the first set 25-17. Old Westbury picked up the pace in the second seeing multiple lead changes, however a late push from the Dolphins capped off by a kill from senior Olatomiwa Ibitayo would make it 2-0. The third set was another battle tied at 21-21, until a 4-0 run put the Dolphins on top to win the match.

Rose impressed with 10 kills and 6 service aces, while Ibitayo also added 10 kills of his own. Junior Matthew Barrancos led the way with 19 assists, to go along with 5 kills, 5 digs, two service aces and two block assists. Graduate student Felix Paulino registered 9 digs, while senior Carlos Martinez and freshman Ethan Castro added 7 each.

The Dolphins looked to continue their winning ways, but struggled in their second match of the day and would lose in three sets by the scores of 25-9, 25-16, and 25-17. The home team was too much for the UMSV, but head coach Jeremiah Huntt once again saw strong performances from multiple Dolphins. Rose and Freshman Tyler Hanna registered 5 kills each, along with 3 and 2 digs respectively, while Barrancos finished with 9 assists, 6 digs, and 3 service aces.

The Dolphins are back in action on Monday and will face the Old Westbury Panthers once again, this time on their home court in the Peter Jay Sharp Center.
