Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dolphins' Season Comes to an End Against the Knights in Semifinals

Newburgh, NY - Coming off of a first round win over #3 Manhattanville, the University of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team looked to carry the momentum into Thursday night's semifinal match up against Mount Saint Mary College. Despite being the sixth seed, the Dolphins were determined to make their return to the Skyline Conference Championship, but unfortunately fell to the Knights 68-51.

The Dolphins proved early on that they can compete with one of the top teams in the conference, trailing by only five points at the end of the first quarter. A put back from junior captain JaKaia Lotz cut the Knights' lead to three to start the second quarter. It was a one possession game as both teams would go on to exchange baskets, until a layup from freshman Grace Kennedy tied things up with four minutes to play. The Knights would then go on a 9-0 run, finishing the half with a 32-23 lead.

The home team knocked down a pair of free throws to start the third quarter, increasing their lead to 11 points. The Dolphins would then go on their own 8-0 run to bring them within three points, however the Knights responded and had a 48-36 lead going into the final ten minutes. UMSV was able to convert on three consecutive possessions to start the fourth quarter, putting them down only six points with seven minutes remaining. The Knights quickly responded and increased their lead with five straight points and the Dolphins struggled to find an answer.

Kennedy closed out her first collegiate season with an impressive 17-point performance. Lotz grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, to go along with 8 points and a pair of steals. Graduate captain Kayla Hanley added 7 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Sophomore Michaela Ligon had 6 points, 3 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, while transfer Gretta Baker added 7 points and 3 rebounds.

Although this season did not end in the Dolphins' favor, the future is bright for Coach Maria Nardulli's team with Kennedy, Lotz, Ligon, and Baker all returning next season.
