Dolphins Battle Valiants In Skyline Opener

Riverdale, NY - The latest saga in the Dolphins/Valiants rivarly opened Skyline Conference play on Wednesday - and Manhattanville got the better of the latest showdown.

The University of Mount Saint Vincent was poised to pick up their second win of 2025 in their matchup against the Valiants at home. The opponents, however, had other plans, as Manhattanville walked away winners by the score of 68-56, dropping UMSV's record to 1-2 on the year.

Junior Nailea Green had her second consecutive strong performance, this time securing a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards to go along with two assists and a steal. Junior Gretta Baker scored 12 points of her own while shooting 66% from three, while Michaela Ligon came off the bench and was a spark with a nine-pont, four rebound game. Angelina Escobinas added a team-best five assists, and AB Burnett had seven points of her own.

The first quarter featured high paced action on both ends of the floor. The Valiants jumped out to an early lead, but the Dolphins continued to chip away, with Green, Baker, Ligon and Escobinas all chipping in. Burnett made it a two point game with a deep three ball to open the second quarter, but it was Manhattanville who remained on top leading into the break.

Despite trailing by double digits, UMSV wouldn't go down quietly. Escobinas hit shot from beyond the arc of her own, cutting the deficit to seven. Green and Baker would score in the next two possession, bringing the score to 37-34 mid way through the third. The Dolphins defensive effort was apparent with eight steals, but their collective 33 turnovers made it tough to climb back into the lead.

The Dolphins will look to right the ship on Saturday when they head to Patchogue to challenge St. Joseph's University Long Island.
