Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent appeared on the Sharp Center floor for the first time in 2025, challenging Western Connecticut State University while looking to piggyback on their season opening win. That will have to come the next time out, as the Dolphins fell to the Wolves by the score of 50-37, bringing their overall record to 1-1 on the season.
Gretta Baker led all UMSV student-athletes with 10 points and was the only player to reach double figures. Junior
Michaela Ligon impressed off the bench, dominating the boards with 12 rebounds while chipping in six points and three steals. Freshman
Grace Giacinto added six points, a steam-high four steals and two assists of her own while bigs
Nailea Green and
Julia Angeles combined for 11 rebounds.
The Wolves jumped out to an early 12-0 lead to kick off the game, but the Dolphins chipped away once down. They went on a 10 point run in response, with Baker and Ashley Morrocco scoring five points each. UMSV would take the lead to kick off the second quarter when
Angelina Escobinas kicked off the period with a three pointer. The Wolves, however, would go on another run over the remainder of the half, giving them a 10 point lead at the half way point.
UMSV would continue to try and make it a single digit deficit, but West Conn answered each shot attempt. They would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the contest while forcing the Dolphins to make just eight shots on 27 attempts in the final two quarters of action.
The Dolphins will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they play host to Manhattanville.
